Balancing Work and Travel: Tips for Remote RV Life

Balancing Work and Travel: Tips for Remote RV Life
When we first started traveling full-time, we pictured working with mountain views, answering emails beside a campfire, and exploring somewhere new every weekend.
Sometimes that's exactly what happens.
Other days we're troubleshooting internet issues, trying to finish work before checkout time, or squeezing in meetings while our kids are asking when we're going hiking.
That's the reality of remote RV life. It isn't perfect, but we've found a rhythm that works for our family, and it's made this lifestyle even more rewarding.
Here are a few things we've learned along the way.
Start Every Week With a Plan
One of the biggest mistakes we made early on was deciding where to go before deciding when we needed to work.
Now we look at our calendar first.
If we know we'll have a busy work week, we'll book a campground for several nights instead of moving every day. Fewer travel days mean more uninterrupted time to focus and less stress trying to meet deadlines.
When work slows down, that's when we plan the scenic drives, hikes, and longer adventures.
Don't Chase the Best Campsite. Chase the Best Internet.
Nothing can ruin a productive day faster than discovering your internet barely works after you've already set up camp.
Before booking anywhere, we always check:
- Cell coverage
- Campground reviews that mention internet speeds
- Nearby coffee shops or libraries
- Whether the campsite has heavy tree cover that could affect Starlink
Beautiful views are great, but reliable internet keeps everything else possible.
Create a Space That Feels Like an Office
Working from the kitchen table works...until it doesn't.
Even if your workspace is small, having a dedicated area makes a huge difference.
For us, that means keeping our laptops, chargers, notebooks, and cameras together so we can sit down and get started without unpacking everything each time.
The easier it is to start working, the easier it is to stay productive.
Work Before You Explore
This one has been one of our biggest productivity hacks.
It's tempting to spend the morning exploring and tell yourself you'll work later.
Most of the time, later turns into dinner, sunset, relaxing by the fire, and wondering where the day went.
We've found it's much easier to finish the important work first.
Once it's done, we can enjoy the rest of the day without constantly thinking about unfinished tasks.
Build Flexibility Into Your Schedule
Things happen on the road.
You might have to change a tire.
A campground could lose power.
Weather might completely change your plans.
Instead of scheduling every hour of every day, we leave room for the unexpected.
Having that flexibility has saved us from a lot of unnecessary stress.
Include the Whole Family
One thing we've learned is that remote work affects everyone.
If one person is on an important call, everyone else needs to know.
Our kids have learned that sometimes Mom or Dad has to work for a little while before we head to the playground or the next adventure.
They're surprisingly understanding when they know what's coming.
Remember Why You Started
It's easy to get caught up in emails, meetings, and deadlines.
Every once in a while we stop and remind ourselves why we chose this lifestyle.
It wasn't just to work from different places.
It was to spend more time together.
To watch our kids experience places most families only visit on vacation.
To slow down.
To build memories instead of routines.
Work makes this lifestyle possible, but it shouldn't keep us from enjoying it.
Finding that balance looks different for every family, and we're still learning every day.
Final Thoughts
Working remotely from an RV isn't about finding the perfect schedule.
It's about creating one that fits your family.
Some weeks you'll work more than you travel.
Other weeks you'll spend more time outside than behind a laptop.
That's okay.
The freedom to choose is one of the best parts of this lifestyle, and it's something we never take for granted.
